buckle up

NOAA’s 2010 Atlantic Hurricane Seasonal Outlook is calling an 85 percent chance of an above normal season. Compelling when compared alongside a 10 percent likelihood of a 'normal' season and only a 5 percent chance of an inactive season. For us surfers it means the possibly of some great surf ala Hurricane Bill/Danny/Ida last year.

But a hyperactive season similar to a number of seasons since 1995 may possibly also bring terrible destruction, to which New Orleans can attest. Thus excitement must be tempered by being prepared. 2010 is further complicated in The Gulf by the continuing oil spill where high seas could set the clean-up process back substantially.

NOAA:

An “active to extremely active” hurricane season is expected for the Atlantic Basin this year according to the seasonal outlook issued today by NOAA’s Climate Prediction Center –- a division of the National Weather Service. As with every hurricane season, this outlook underscores the importance of having a hurricane preparedness plan in place.

Across the entire Atlantic Basin for the six-month season, which begins June 1, NOAA is projecting a 70 percent probability of the following ranges:

14 to 23 Named Storms (top winds of 39 mph or higher), including:

8 to 14 Hurricanes (top winds of 74 mph or higher), of which:

3 to 7 could be Major Hurricanes (Category 3, 4 or 5; winds of at least 111 mph)

“If this outlook holds true, this season could be one of the more active on record,” said Jane Lubchenco, Ph.D., under secretary of commerce for oceans and atmosphere and NOAA administrator. “The greater likelihood of storms brings an increased risk of a landfall. In short, we urge everyone to be prepared.”

The outlook ranges exceed the seasonal average of 11 named storms, six hurricanes and two major hurricanes. Expected factors supporting this outlook are:

Upper atmospheric winds conducive for storms. Wind shear, which can tear apart storms, will be weaker since El Niño in the eastern Pacific has dissipated. Strong wind shear helped suppress storm development during the 2009 hurricane season.

Warm Atlantic Ocean water. Sea surface temperatures are expected to remain above average where storms often develop and move across the Atlantic. Record warm temperatures – up to four degrees Fahrenheit above average – are now present in this region.

High activity era continues. Since 1995, the tropical multi-decadal signal has brought favorable ocean and atmospheric conditions in sync, leading to more active hurricane seasons. Eight of the last 15 seasons rank in the top ten for the most named storms with 2005 in first place with 28 named storms.

“The main uncertainty in this outlook is how much above normal the season will be. Whether or not we approach the high end of the predicted ranges depends partly on whether or not La Niña develops this summer,” said Gerry Bell, Ph.D., lead seasonal hurricane forecaster at NOAA’s Climate Prediction Center. “At present we are in a neutral state, but conditions are becoming increasingly favorable for La Niña to develop.”

"FEMA is working across the administration and with our state and local partners to ensure we're prepared for hurricane season," said FEMA Administrator Craig Fugate. "But we can only be as prepared as the public, so it's important that families and businesses in coastal communities take steps now to be ready. These include developing a communications plan, putting together a kit, and staying informed of the latest forecasts and local emergency plans. You can't control when a hurricane or other emergency may happen, but you can make sure you're ready."

The president recently designated May 23-29, 2010, as National Hurricane Preparedness Week. NOAA and FEMA encourage those living in hurricane-prone states to use this time to review their overall preparedness. More information on individual and family preparedness can be found at www.Ready.gov and www.hurricanes.gov/prepare.

NOAA scientists will continue to monitor evolving conditions in the tropics and will issue an updated hurricane outlook in early August, just prior to what is historically the peak period for hurricane activity.

Visitor & Baby Shower

This weekend marked the first full week of graduate school for Jimmy. So far, so good! Friday night we took it easy because Jimmy had class all day on Saturday. Saturday night we had the pleasure of hanging out with Dan, in town from Baltimore, MD, and Jake. We hadn't seen Dan since our wedding, so it was great to catch up with him. Jake, Dan, Jimmy and I were all roommates for a period of time in Santa Monica. Oh how we all miss those days. Here's a pic from Saturday night of the gang back together...

Sunday morning I had to bake a cake for my friend Lauren's bridal shower at noon. Why I take on baking projects when I know I can't bake worth a darn, I don't know. I eyeball everything I cook, so the precision required in baking screws me up every time. Anyways, two batches of cake later and flour on every surface of my kitchen and I had made the Lady Strawberry Cake I learned about from Wedded Whittaker. I was in a big hurry, so I didn't take a picture until I got to the shower. Here it is under the glass dome. Not the best picture, but it was a big hit!

The shower was beautiful. Lauren's friends went above and beyond with the food and decor. Perhaps the best part though was the 10 minutes I had with her daughter, Bailey. I could just eat her up. I guess it was almost as much fun to see her mama showered with gifts and love...

Hope everyone has a good start to the week tomorrow!

Section 12-32 of the Code of the Town of Kure Beach

About a month ago Jimmy and I got a letter in the mail from his Uncle John and Aunt Sharon in Mount Airy, MD. The letter contained a nice note from Sharon and a newspaper clipping from their local paper. The article was about Carolina Beach's neighboring beach community, Kure Beach, and the recent ordinance put in place banning thongs on their beach. Since then, the news has also made CNN, calling Kure Beach "Mayberry on the beach". I just went on to Facebook this morning and saw this video titled "Kure Beach Thong Song". Far from the Sisqo version, it's still pretty funny. Good thing Jimmy and I live in Carolina Beach, otherwise we might be looking at some $25 fines...Yeah right, I would rather die than expose my heiny...

More than Just Marketing

I'm going to toot my own horn for a minute and make the announcement that I've taken a new position at my company. It's not a promotion, just a lateral move, but a new role that I'm very excited about nonetheless. Kaylie O'Connor, Business Developer, will work more strategically on our core business behind the scenes and help bring new products/services to market. I studied Advertising at UNC and have worked in Marketing/Advertising since I got out of college, so I'm looking forward to proving to myself and the world that I can take on a role outside of my comfort zone. I officially start on June 1st. The sky is the limit...

Charleston Bachelorette Weekend

Well it was another fun weekend for me! I went to Charleston Friday after work for my childhood friend, Lauren's bachelorette weekend. Here's some pics of us Friday night in our cute "Bachelorettes Gone Wild" tanks and Lauren being a good sport in her a veil/tiara contraption.

Saturday we went to an early lunch at a local favorite called Magnolia's. I was so excited to hear that the Food Network had just been there last week to feature their famous pimento cheese on the show "The Best Thing I Ever Ate". I, of course, had to give the dish my own personal review and I must say, it was definitely 2 thumbs up!

Saturday night we went to dinner at a cute Italian place called Mercato. I had, no joke, the best spaghetti and meatballs I've ever eaten outside of a Heintzelman kitchen or the Boulevard Tavern in Youngstown, OH.  Amazing.

Sunday I got up not so bright-eyed or bushy tailed and got myself home just in time to meet Jimmy at the beach for a nap on the sand. Here's me at Harbor Masters enjoying dinner with Jimmy in our little slice of heaven, Carolina Beach...

Last, but certainly not least, Jimmy had his business school orientation this weekend and is at his first class tonight. In typical Jimmy fashion, he's super excited and making the most of every bit of it. So proud of him...

Charleston & Chapel Hill

In the midst of packing for my next adventure this coming weekend, I'm finally getting around to posting about this past weekend. So, last Friday I left work a little early to meet my mom, dad and brother, Colin - visiting from Tucson, AZ - in Charleston for an old family friend's wedding. The wedding party, of course, had the rehearsal dinner Friday evening, so my family fended for ourselves at Poe's Tavern on Sullivan's Island. Poe's is seriously the cutest restaurant with great burgers and fries.

Saturday we woke up and went to breakfast at the famous Hominy Grill. I had really good shrimp and grits - a local favorite! Then we spent the rest of the day on Saturday relaxing by the pool where the wedding party and guests were staying.

Though very, very hot and humid, the wedding Saturday afternoon was beautiful. So happy for Jonathan and his lovely bride, Katie. I am so glad we all got to be there and celebrate with you and all our family friends.

We left the reception at about 8:30pm so we could start the trek to Chapel Hill (5 hours) for... drumroll please... Ali's college graduation on Sunday morning!! So proud of you Al and all the other "sea of blue" graduates"!

The graduate with a midday brewski during lunch (kids these days) and then proof of why that she deserves it...

As if this post (and weekend) wasn't long enough already, next we went to La Residence for a special graduation dinner party for Ali and a couple of her friends. La Residence is where Ali has worked since she's been in college and is also where Jimmy and I worked during our Carolina years - some could even say it's where we fell for each other. La Rez was also where I had my graduation dinner with roomates Shiva, Catherine and Lindsey some 4 years ago. I digress. Anyways, it was a wonderful night.

Next up is Charleston (again) this coming weekend for Lauren Lea's bachelorette weekend. Woo hoo!
